Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues to release Women Status Report

CHEYENNE - The Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues (WCWI) will present its new Wyoming Women Status Report to Gov. Dave Freudenthal at 11 a.m. on Jan. 18 at the Parkway Plaza in Casper.

The WCWI initiated the new Wyoming Women Status Report to give a snap shot of women’s key issues and indicators, providing trend data when possible. The purpose is to both raise awareness of certain issues and to track progress in addressing those issues. An example is the wage disparity issue.

“We need to continue to raise awareness of the magnitude of this problem,” said WCWI Chair Teresa de Groh. “Women in Wyoming experience the largest gap between men’s and women’s average wages in the nation. It may or may not come as a surprise to find that the gap is actually getting worse.”

Another issue addressed in the report is the number of women in nontraditional careers. “One of the reasons Wyoming’s wage gap is so large is that the industries with the highest paying jobs are also the industries in which there are the lowest proportions of women, i.e., natural resources and mining, manufacturing, etc.,” said de Groh. "Tracking the number of women in nontraditional careers gives insight into the success of various programs aimed at encouraging women to seek employment in these nontraditional, but booming, industries in Wyoming.”

The Wyoming Women Status Report will be available on the WCWI Web site at www.wyomingwomenscouncil.org after it is presented to Gov. Freudenthal on Jan. 18.

The Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues is a 13-member council with representation from each of the nine Judicial Districts in addition to four at large members and one ex-officio member of the Wyoming Business Council. The WCWI is a Governor appointed council.
