Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues sends delegates to national convention

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues (WCWI) represented the state at the National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW) 35th annual convention held at the Westin Pasadena in Pasadena, California July 14-18, 2004.

The convention brought together women’s commissions from across the country to focus on the theme, “Many Voices, Many Choices.” Delegates from the WCWI included: Michelle Aldrich of Cheyenne; Virginia Romero-Caron of Rock Springs; Cynthia Chavez Kelly of Laramie and Jan Torres of Rock Springs.

“The annual NACW convention is an ideal opportunity to strengthen our coalitions, expand knowledge on issues impacting women, network with professional colleagues, and share programs that reflect the issues that impact women today,” said Michelle Aldrich of the WCWI. “We are also providing strong representation for the State of Wyoming. Our participation demonstrates that Wyoming recognizes the important challenges that face women today and that they are strongly committed to addressing those changes.”

The Opening President’s Reception featured a welcome from Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, with music provided by the Pasadena Jazz Institute. In addition to meetings for association business, convention attendees had the opportunity to attend a variety of 25 workshops, including Strategies for Building a Diverse Leadership Pipeline; Managing Challenging Elders; Accelerating the Pace of Women’s Progress as Policy Leaders; Emerging Social Trends on Aging Women; Women in Elected Office and Better Choices for Children.

Presenters represented a wide variety of organizations: The USC Gerontology Center, Victoria Ballesteros of Children’s Defense Fund, Virginia Romero-Caron of the Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues and Dr. Letitia Wright.

The Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues is a 13-member council with representation from each of the nine Judicial Districts in addition to four at large members and one ex-officio member of the Wyoming Business Council. The WCWI is a Governor appointed council.
